間違えやすいので、ちょっとだけ説明します。 ① 前置詞 [preposition]until (till) （まで）や by （までに）のすぐ後時間の表現がくる： ■ 10 o’clock ■ noon / midnight ■ Monday 例えば ** be back by noon ** work until 5 pm どのように区別かは動詞によって決まる。 ★Be back by: 一度戻れば、戻っていることになる。 別な言い方をすると、 戻るのにずっと時間をかけることは論外。 戻った時の「期限」がぽいんと。 期限（締め切り）より前でしたらOK. 例： We got home by 5 o’clock. I have to do this report by Friday. ★Work until 5 pm: いつまで時間がかかる・かかったのが本題。 「動作・継続」がポイント 例： The meeting was postponed until (till, to) next week. We study until late. The speech lasted until late afternoon. Remark 期限なのか動作なのかは動詞によって決まってくるが、 否定に注意！ She didn’t return until midnight. は意味上「夜中の１２時まで出かけていた。」 「帰る」よりも「出かけている動作・行動」が重点。 ② 接続詞 [conjunction]（by / until + SV） Wait until I get back. 帰るまで待っててね。終了点を表す。 ある意味、始まりの起点を表す since （～して以来）の反対語。 接続詞として by をそのままで用いられない、 by the time を使う。 Dinner was ready by the time I got home. → go to test No.1 test 2 test 3 test 4 |
